NASS crisis: Dogara adjourns plenary till July

Dogara

As an aftermath of the leadership crisis that broke out at the House of Representatives during plenary on Thursday, the Speaker of the House, Hon. Yakubu Dogara, was forced to announce a long adjournment of plenary till July 21, 2015.

Before announcing the adjournment, the Speaker reminded the members that they belong to a priviledged class amongst Nigerians and should as such conduct themselves in a peaceful manner and face the task of providing qualitative leadership to Nigerians.

Dogara expressed his disappointment over the ongoing squabble, saying that Nigerians are in high expectation for members to hit the ground running on legislative matters, and that as long as members remain divided, effective legislation will be impossible.

He asserted that disagreement was inevitable, but not the one that will frustrate the job they are expected to do and jeopardize nationhood.

Dogara said,

“The people of Nigeria want to hear us talk about poverty, insecurity, unemployment and as long as the house is divided and not united, we cannot achieve that. We have been down this perilous road before. I plead of us as Hon members and as leaders that all hands must be on desk to enable us achieve the desired unity that will help us move this house forward. That is the responsibility we owe.

“For the issues that led to the chaos today, we will sit as leaders and approach whatever divide we have to ensure that this matters are quickly resolved and on that note, I am moving for adjournment of proceedings by virtue of rule 10 and mutual concern. I hereby adjourn this house to July 21, 2015. The house stands adjourned,” Dogara said.

Buhari threatened with law suit over ministerial appointments

buhari4
For mulling the idea of not appointing a minister from each of the 36 states of the federation, a Kaduna-based lawyer, Sunny Akanni, has threatened to drag President Muhammadu Buhari to court.
According to Akanni, it would amount to gross violation of the Nigerian constitution if the President failed to appoint ministers to represent each state of the federation.

He said the constitution is so clear on ministerial appointments by the President, asking why the President would be contemplating reducing the number of ministers in order to cut cost.

The lawyer said: “I have heard speculations that the President wants to reduce the number of ministers to be appointed to save cost of governance. That is a very good step and I commend him for that, but in taking such step, he has to be conscious of the provisions of the Constitution as well.

“Section 147 of the Constitution said the President shall appoint at least one minister from each state of the federation, who shall be indigene of such state.

“So, if a minister is not appointed from my state, I will challenge it in court because that is a violation of the provisions of section 147 of the Constitution. So it is compulsory that he appoints ministers from each of the states, he has no choice.”

Maheeda alleges step father raped her at 11, says no need for Father’s Day

maheeda

As fathers were celebrated globally, controversial gospel singer and nudist, Maheeda has said there was no point celebrating the day, since she never benefited from those she called her father.

She said while her real father left her five months after her birth, her step father whom she grew to know as a father assaulted her sexually, by raping her when she was only 11 years.

She further clarified that, by her real father leaving her, she meant that the man passed on while she was still tender, hence she never got a fatherly love.

Maheeda who made this known in series of tweets , rhetorically asked why she should celebrate a day that has left a permanent scar on her.

In a response to some wishes, Maheeda wrote,

‘’ Happy Father’s Day? Which father? The father that left me from 5 months old? Or the step father that raped me growing up? Fuck the Father’s Day!! Not for me huh? Keep your wishes.”

I have 3 daughters for Fani Kayode, but marriage was brief, unmemorable – Ex-wife

Yemisi Wada

Ex-wife of Nigerian controversial politician and former Director of Media and Publicity of the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP), Femi Fani-Kayode, Mrs Yemisi Wada, has opened up concerning her erstwhile marriage to FFK as he is popularly called.

Mrs. Wada who is currently married to another top millionaire revealed that she has no fond memories of her ex-husband, Fani Kayode.

The woman who had three daughters for the politician also said that their marriage didn’t last long as presumed by people.

“As a young girl, if anybody had told me my marriage would break up, I wouldn’t have believed it. That is why even after three children, I knew I would remarry. I don’t know if it is that love of being a wife or to run a home. Whichever, I love being married. I have no fond memories of ex-husband, Femi Fani-Kayode, except having my daughters, as I am sure he would say same if asked.

“What people do not seem to realise is that we were together for only a very short while. The marriage itself lasted less than three years. The fact that I have three daughters makes it seem longer, but I left just when I was pregnant with my youngest daughter,” she said.

She however disclosed that what attracted her to the lawyer was his aspiration towards his career.

“It was a long time ago but I think at the time, all the men I knew were clubbing like I was but he was already serious in politics. He was a national youth leader of his party and the proposal was very direct as he said, ‘I am in politics and I need a homemade” She revealed.

Meanwhile, the former Aviation Minister is presently engaged to his newly found love, Precious Chikwendu, a former Miss United Nations World -2014.

I don’t really know my age – Charlyboy

Charlyboy and family
Charlyboy and family

Maverick entertainer, Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charlyboy marks his Birthday today, June 19th. Although, the entertainer cum social crusader is very sure of the actual date he was born, he noted in this interview that he cannot remember exactly his actual years of age. The Area Fada who may be attending a surprise party later tonight, as organized by family and friends, let out some hitherto unknown things running through his mind; his wish to have one more bike ride with his late dad, and other sundry issues.

Excerpts…

Considering that today is your birthday, how do you feel about the journey so far, fulfilled?

I feel great. I feel blessed. I thank God always. It’s a mindset thing. I share cloths with my sons sometimes, they tell me what’s in and what’s out. Most of my associates are all young people. In short, I no get wahala. Maybe in the next three years or so, I may become a great grandfather. Now that would be awesome. So I have more than enough to be thankful for. Yes I’m not only fulfilled as a person, I have found an inner peace that I want to share with people who also seek spiritual nourishment.

There are conflicting reports on your actual age. Is this part of the ploy to keep an enigma character?

You may find it funny, but I don’t really know my age; I have given so many dates. I’m confused myself. Ha! How people came about 64 is still a wonder to me. I’m not particular about how old or young the number is. What I care about is the age of my mind and then the age of my body.

From my look, my energy and all, I feel 35 or slightly younger. Then the age of my mind; going by my experiences, my responsibilities, my wisdom and all, I should be about 87. I’m glad I can’t even remember. Yea, you may be right; it might also be a ploy to keep the brand staying enigmatic. One can’t really tell with Charlyboy, abi?

What events or activities have you or your family and friends lined up to use in commemorating today?

I’m really not one for too much celebration because it’s just another day in my book, but because my son and a few of my grandchildren are putting all this together, it’s special for me. They just asked me to show up so I could be entertained. I’m going with my mum; that will be fun for her. Most of it is a surprise.

How do you feel celebrating today without a father you have called your mentor?

I wish he is still around. Miss him an awful lot, I didn’t really know how close we were till he passed on, but I’m happy I made him proud. I’m happy I gave him all the love I could give a friend. I’m glad he died peacefully in my house, and wish it was in my arms. But, my mother is still around so she gets to enjoy me more now.

Do you think the Charlyboy brand fares better with your advancement in age?

Like a very fine wine, I have mature over the years. I been there, done that and have seen pepper, now I know where it’s for me. Certain things are not as important to me as they were many years ago. I have found that inner peace and have hooked up with my happy core. But the boy still lives here. As crazy as weird as they come. There is a time and season for everything, but I will always enjoy pushing people’s buttons.

Charlyboy was created to shock timid, myopic and mongoparkish Nigerians into a new way of thinking and mindset. I have always been for the masses and will be till I die, that will never change. The ability to shock and awe will never go away. No, I have not simmered down as Charlyboy, but I believe that more of me as Charles Emeka Oputa is now coming out than Charlyboy. But people have always been more interested in my antics than my message. They rather talk more about me taking a nap in my casket than me counseling drug addicts or mentoring damaged youths. So not to worry, there will always be something for tongue wagers to talk about. I still dey kampe.

Looking back over the years, what can you say were your major achievements?

Living my life as I see fit and never letting anyone kill my dreams. I have saved a lot of young people from giving up. I have created and mentored a lot of very successful stars today, and I pioneered the Big money wave and respect for the Nigerian artiste.

If you are to have a wish that would come true on account of your birthday today, what would that wish be?

To have one more bike ride with my father.

You recently marked your 37th marriage anniversary. Can you tell us a little about the challenges and how you were able to manage same?

Marriage is a very fragile institution now in Nigeria, but I have been extremely lucky, though it hasn’t really been a bed of roses like some people would believe. However, God took pity on me and gave me a woman He ‘custom built’ for me. You know before I married Diane, I had tried three times without success. We are just two determined people who want to make it work. It’s a lot of hard work and perseverance, along with a lot of bullshit. Rice can never be beans and beans can never be rice. If you like cook them in the same pot, they will always be different. They’ll still perform their different functions, what you will get is a different taste from the mixture. That’s marriage, what you get is not as a result of only you anymore but a mixture of two. You’ve got to take it as it comes. What counts in making a happy marriage is not so much how compatible you are, but how you deal with each other’s incompatibility. Gbam!

You have kept to a particular artistic lifestyle for several years, how did you sustain this despite people’s shallow understanding of the art?

I no send anybody, no one can put me down or shut me up. Even in the beginning when my father didn’t understand and thought I was wasting my life ,it was my tremendous focus, my tenacity, consistency and my never say die attitude that won his respect. How many times did he apologise to me? that’s why we became the best of friends. I don’t follow trends or society dictates. I set my own path and everyone follows, I have been that way since childhood, so doing Charlyboy was second nature. I have a tough skin and a strong belief in myself. You wan try?

How would you advise young people whose inspiration and desires are limited by societal norms, considering that you are relatively a norm breaker?

Never let anyone kill your dreams.

Stop comparing me with DaGrin – Olamide

Olamide

Indigenous rapper, Olamide Adedeji, famously known as Badoo has frowned at those likening his music style to that of the late Oladapo Olaitan Olaonipekun, otherwise known as Dagrin.

Several music buffs have been placing both rappers side by side.

However, the Story For the gods crooner is not comfortable with such verdict, saying that both of them are not in the same category.

Victor Attah kicks against Saraki’s emergence as Senate President

download
The Former Governor of Akwa Ibom State, and one of the founding members of the PDP,Obong Victor Attah has reacted to the outcome of the National Assembly elections, describing the ongoing event at the Senate as very sad and unfortunate, saying, it’s “an unfortunate return to garrison politics.”
The former Governor also exonerated President Buhari from the ongoing squabble, saying he was not given the chance as the leader of the party to address the issue before it escalated.
He commended Femi Gbajabimila for not accepting the position of Deputy Speaker after he lost to Dogara, saying, “Graciously he rose from his seat, embraced and congratulated the man who had defeated him and that immediately put the elected speaker at ease. That can only help to deepen democracy
“More than that, Gbajabiamila demonstrated that his ambition was not just to occupy an office, so he turned down, without hesitation, the offer to take the position of deputy.”
Read his full reaction below:
“First let me look at the process. In the Green Chamber, Gbajabiamila, a well respected and popular contestant for speakership and indeed the preferred candidate of his party, the APC, lost. He lost by eight votes. Pity, but the fact remains that he lost by a democratic process.
“Graciously he rose from his seat, embraced and congratulated the man who had defeated him and that immediately put the elected speaker at ease. That can only help to deepen democracy
“More than that, Gbajabiamila demonstrated that his ambition was not just to occupy an office, so he turned down, without hesitation, the offer to take the position of deputy.
“He gained my respect and admiration and I dare say that gesture has surely put the entire House at ease in much the same way as former President Jonathan’s decision to concede victory to President Buhari helped to put Nigeria at ease.
“In the Red Chamber, the Senate, the story was quite different. The President, a newly elected President had called members of his party to a meeting ahead of the convocation. Some members of his party and the Clerk of the Senate took advantage of that to enact what can only be described as an unfortunate return to garrison politics. How sad! How very sad!
“Forget what the party had done, I will come to that, but this is a President that had said, with all honesty, that he had no favorite. Who knows if what the President intended to tell his party members at the meeting that was so rudely snubbed was not to say that they should vote
their conscience.
“After all, the National Assembly which is composed of several parties is to serve the nation and not only one party.
“With APC having 59 members and the PDP 49, and given the fact that both Saraki and Lawan – the preferred candidates, are of the same party, any one of them could have won and the victory would have been glorious if it had been as a result of proper democratic process rather than brinkmanship.
“However let us look at the consequence of the leadership split – Senate President, APC; Deputy Senate President, PDP. Deployed positively this is bound to be good for the country provided the PDP does not take advantage
of its position to play the dog in the manger.
The President must be not hamstrung in his desire for change which we all voted for, but by the same token every legislation will now need support from both sides to sail through. We can learn lessons from President Obama’s Medicare bill.
“The issue of party supremacy is a different matter. It must not be forgotten that the elected members constitute the constituency for the election of their leaders.
Unfortunately, ruling parties tend always to treat such elections as party matter which in fact they are not. That is why I referred to both Gbajabiamila and Lawan as preferred candidates – preferred by their party
APC but the final choice must be that of the elected members to make.t
“Party supremacy unfortunately has often been used as a weapon for, and a thin veil to dress up the undemocratic phenomen of imposition. Indeed democracy has had a new birth, let us nurture it to maturity.”

Tears as Aisha Buhari, Mrs Osinbajo meet mothers of Chibok

images
President Muhammadu Buhari alongside his wife, Aisha; and the wife of the Vice-President, Dolapo Osinbajo, met with two mothers of the abducted Chibok girls amid tears on Friday.
The two mothers who have suffered great devastation over the abduction of their daughters for more than a year met with the first and second families inside the Defence House, Abuja, where Buhari currently operates from.
Wife of the Vice President, Mrs. Osinbajo earlier led the two women to a meeting with Hajia Buhari, and also took them to see the President himself.
The women and Mrs Osinbajo eventually broke down in tears after they came out of the meeting.
According to Mrs Osinbajo, the President and his wife have shown that they are truly the father and mother of the nation by the way they received the two women.
She said, “Hajia Aisha Buhari had for many months wanted to visit Chibok. She also wanted to meet with the mothers.
“Today, we had an opportunity for them to meet face-to-face. We had two of the mothers who still have their daughters missing after a year.
“Hajia met with them, held them and they cried, everybody cried. What only a mother will do is to say ‘wait, I want you to see your father and see what your father will do.’
“We were all overwhelmed that at this time when the President is so busy, he had time to meet with the women from Chibok.
“He spoke to them in English and Hausa. He explained to them how he keeps telling everybody to put themselves in their place.

“So, today we have had the opportunity for the President and Hajia to show that they are our father and mother, for that we are glad.”

Why we stopped going to church since 2007 – P-Square

imageMusic stars, Paul and Peter Okoye of P-Square fame have explained why they stopped going to church for the past eight years.
In a recent chat with Nigerian Camera, the “Busy Body” singers said whenever they attended church, there was too much attention on them instead of God.
“Each time we attend, other worshippers would not listen to the Pastor’s sermon again. All eyes will just be on us. Instead of praying, some people will even decide to be starring at us. We were not comfortable with that and thought we were distracting a lot of people from serving their God, so we said to ourselves that we should stop going” they said.

“All men are equal before God, so we don’t encourage people to abandon their primary purpose of being in church because of us,” they further said.

Chido Onumah: President Buhari – Dead end or the rebirth of a nation?

“We can’t continue to search the branches of a sick tree for the cause of its sickness.” – African Proverb

As history unfolds in Nigeria, it does appear that “the more things change the more they remain the same”. As a military dictator, thirty two years ago, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), truncated Nigeria’s Second Republic which was reputed for its scandalous corruption. That intervention lasted twenty months. Today, Buhari will be sworn in as the fourth elected president of Nigeria since the country’s return to civil rule in 1999, replacing a government that was associated with monumental corruption.

The transition from Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (GMB) to President Muhammadu Buhari (PMB) has taken thirty years from when he was overthrown in a palace coup in August 1985. The expectations are high for the new president considering how corruption and years of ineffectual leadership have blighted a once promising country. But will anything change? Of course, it depends on the people you ask, where they come from and what interest they represent.

Personally, I don’t think it will be “business as usual”, at least on a private level, for Nigeria’s oldest president. Beyond his foibles – alleged provincialism and antecedent as a military dictator – Buhari is famed for his asceticism. President Buhari, 73 in December, obviously is a man who has seen it all. I agree completely that leadership is important and that Nigeria needs a strong and purposeful leader. Chances are that President Buhari will not toe the line of malevolent accumulation which has been the hallmark of leadership in Nigeria. He can bring this discipline to bear in the way Nigeria is governed in the next four years.

Candidate Buhari campaigned on the track record of integrity and anti-corruption. It is understandable, therefore, if Nigerians expect, and indeed, demand from him an end to the bleeding as far as corruption is concerned. Even though he has promised to draw a line between past malfeasance and the new order, I think there are a few politically exposed persons – both within the new government and the opposition – who ought to stand trial for their egregious financial crimes against the country whether as presidents, governors, ministers, lawmakers or contractors.

Indeed, President Buhari does not need to entangle himself in the debate about whether to probe certain ministers and individuals or not which dominated the political space preceding his inauguration. All he needs to do if he is serious about fighting corruption is to empower and make truly independent the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and other state agencies responsible for tackling corruption. That way, he extricates himself from the “politics of fighting corruption”.

But looking at the big picture, is this intervention enough to pull Nigeria back from the brink? Nigeria, like many Facebook relationship updates, is complicated. Buhari rode to power at the behest of some people for whom what took place on Election Day, March 28, was nothing but state capture. The fundamental concerns will be how he navigates the interest of this group, his vision of a “new Nigeria”, the interest of millions of disillusioned and deprived citizens, but more important the lack of existential confidence in the nation Nigeria.
Nigeria is a nightmare. Ours is a country of many internal antagonisms and seemingly irreconcilable contradictions. These contradictions define our daily existence and relationship with one another; the antagonisms manifest in the mad quest for political power by individuals and power blocs within the country and ultimately their attitude to the nation’s resources. Reputed as one of the most corrupt nations in the world, Nigeria offers very little hope for self-fulfillment and survival.

Many have argued, and rightly so, that corruption remains perhaps Nigeria’s biggest problem. The hope, therefore, is that President Buhari, “Mr. Anti-corruption”, can deal with corruption and get the Nigerian state to function. So, why has the Nigerian state been unable to tame corruption and why has the state itself defied many attempts to make it functional? The answer is simple: we can’t have a functional state without a functional nation. Clearly, we can’t witness the rebirth of this nation, and by extension the Nigerian state, without unmaking Nigeria. In unmaking Nigeria, we have to deal with the fundamental fault lines that throw our nation into episodic convulsions and define our attitude to our common patrimony.

So while we bask in the euphoria of “change”, we necessarily have to rethink Nigeria. Nigerians must have this conversation not minding the intimidation, blackmail and threats routinely issued by those for whom this nation is a “perfect union”. There is an undeniable link between national identity and development. As Francis Fukuyama notes in his book, Political Order and Political Decay: From the Industrial Revolution to the Globalization of Democracy, “Critical to the success of state building is a parallel process of nation building.” This is the missing puzzle in Nigeria’s quest for development.

The deep-seated corruption in Nigeria is fundamentally structural. Therefore, we have to dig a little further if we really want to tame this canker. Here again, I refer to Fukuyama’s seminal work and his assertion that, “Much of what passes for corruption is not simply a matter of greed but rather the by-product of legislators or public officials who feel more obligated to family, tribe, religion or ethnic group than to the national community and therefore divert money in that direction. They are not necessarily immoral people, but their circle of moral obligation is smaller than that of the polity for which they work.”

What I think Fukuyama is saying in essence is that you can’t deal with entrenched corruption as is the case in some parts of the world without first dealing with the crisis of identity or nationhood. There is no better proof of this notion than the nation Nigeria where the resource that ought to serve our collective purpose and need is pillaged because in the end, nobody really owns it.

It is for this reason that our rulers gratuitously stash billions of dollars – money they may never have access to – in foreign bank accounts; it explains why they would buy and invest in choice property – property they many never live in – around the world. It explains why the president of the federal republic can conveniently make a distinction between “stealing and corruption”; why when a governor or a minister is accused of corruption, for example, his or her “people” will rise in defence. They seem to be saying, “We know Minister A or Governor X is a thief, but he or she is our own thief.”

Essentially, the state, and by extension governance in Nigeria, is about how much of the “national cake” our politicians and rulers can appropriate for themselves and their “people,” not about service to the nation because the nation simply does not exist in their moral universe.

Undoubtedly, Nigeria desperately needs a leader to inspire the people, but we must also have a nation for that inspiration to be meaningful. In the end, this will not be about Buhari but about Nigeria. Buhari can definitely make a difference. If he doesn’t succeed, it won’t be for lack of trying. People have to feel ownership of this contraption called Nigeria for things to work.

I am leaving N9.2bn debt behind – Suswam

Gabriel-Suswam1

The outgoing Governor of Benue State, Gabriel Suswam, has disclosed that his administration will be leaving a dept profile of N9.2bn behind for the incoming administration of Samuel Ortom.

Suswam disclosed this at the Banquet Hall of the Government House Makurdi after presenting his handover notes to Ortom.

He said, “I am leaving behind a total debt profile of N9.2bn for the incoming administration.”

He said he regrets that he did not take the state to a greater heights after spending eight years as a governor.
“Surely, we did not take Benue State to a greater height but that doesn’t mean that we didn’t do our part as a government,” Suswam declared.

According to Suswam, he had remained a fulfilled man having provided the needed platform for the incoming administration to thrive, appealing to the media to extend the same gesture of goodwill to the incoming administration both in the state and at the federal levels.

As a measure of good faith, Suswam also announced that he had instructed his lawyers to withdraw a lawsuit he earlier instituted against Senator Barnabas Gemade at the election tribunal.

He pleaded with the people of the state to forgive him for some of the decisions he might have taken that were contrary to their wishes.
