Woman thought she was pregnant but it was actually an 11lb tumour 

A woman was rushed to hospital after she went into labour – but doctors were forced to perform emergency surgery when they realised that her ‘baby’ was actually an 11lbs tumour.

Medics at the Botosani County Hospital in northern Romania immediately operated on Madalina Neagu after she arrived at the hospital with severe abdominal pain and told them that she was in labour.

But the mammoth tumour was discovered after doctors carried out emergency tests, and found the five kilo growth inside her uterus.

Pic shows: Surgeons extracting the giant tumour.nnRomanian doctors have extracted a 5-kilogram tumor (11 pounds) from the womb of a woman who thought she was pregnant.nnDoctors from Botosani County Hospital in northern Romania decided to immediately operate on Madalina Neagu, 42, after she turned up with severe pain in her abdomen and told them she believed she was in labour.nnDr Dorin Scladan said: "As the woman told us she was pregnant, we initially expected pregnancy complications. In fact, the size of her belly was quite similar to that of a 9-month pregnant woman, we didn't have any reason to doubt what she told us."nnBut after carrying out emergency tests, they were stunned to find out that she was not pregnant, and instead she had a 5-kilogram tumor (11 pounds) inside her uterus.nnDoctors Dorin Scladan and Camelia Todica coordinated the complex emergency surgery that lasted several hours to remove the tumour.nnThe woman was then transferred to intensive care where doctors say that the initial prognosis is that she will now recover after the emergency surgery.nnDr Scladan added: "We don't often see a tumour of this size and in this location. It was a record tumor for the region at all in the past 15 years."nn(ends)  nn
A team of medics headed up by Doctors Dorin Scladan and Camelia Todica coordinated the complex emergency.

Dr Scladan said: ‘As the woman told us she was pregnant, we initially expected pregnancy complications.

‘In fact, the size of her belly was quite similar to that of a 9-month pregnant woman, we didn’t have any reason to doubt what she told us’.
